Likewise, though I wasn't certain about it for the first dozen hours or so, the new super-friendly interface has grown on me quite a bit, despite its almost over-eagerness to move things along. In practice, this turned out to be one of the least transformative changes-after just a few minutes of ordering around my units I barely noticed the difference, and I never once found myself pining for the old squares. Some seem like a bigger deal than they actually are-going in, I'd expected the most dramatic one would be the shift from the traditional map of a grid of squares to Civ V 's honeycomb of hexagons. Under the striking visual layer are innumerable changes to the usual Civ gameplay. It's the most beautiful, lively virtual game board you've ever seen. Cattle, sheep, horses and elephants graze their respective tiles indicating sources of food, mounts and ivory, and in the hypnotically glistening ocean you can see whales breaching and schools of fish swimming beneath the surface. Zooming in on a tile with a fur resource shows a pair of foxes frolicking together. The painterly art style of the randomly-generated virgin landscape you see when starting a new game feels like Monet meets Google Maps, with bright colors and stunning attention to detail. Graphics may be superficial in a game like this, but it has to be said that Civ V is indisputably the best looking turn-based strategy game ever made. You begin with a single settler in 4000 BC, and over the next 6,050 years you lead your fledgling nation turn-by-turn as you found a city, research technologies, raise an army, build history's greatest man-made wonders, expand to a sprawling empire and finally make your play for world domination - all in competition with other nations.
TIRED Appeal is limited to patient gamers.At a foundational level, it's very familiar. WIRED Deep and complex gameplay multiple ways to win provides good replay value more accessible than previous Civilization games. If Halo: Reach is heaven on earth for twitch-gamers everywhere, then Civilization V is the thinking man's paradise. In a sea of shooters with pounding soundtracks and frenetic gameplay, Civilization V is one of the few games to challenge players' minds – to have them sit back and analyze situations methodically. Watching your civilization grow from just a few patches of land all the way to a world superpower with a space-exploration program and several skyscrapers is an absolute joy. With each turn, your workers make steady progress and the landscape changes. Dust clouds rise as your citizens strike the earth to produce buildings, and sparks fly when they construct a mine from the ground up. The changes your cities go through are small and slow, but they're rendered with precise detail.
The interesting graphics go a long way toward accomplishing this. New players will also receive frequent pop-ups that give them recommendations on what to do next or simply instruct them about how a particular gameplay element works.īut, for me at least, most of the enjoyment comes from simply watching your civilization grow. For instance, you no longer need to build roads on resource tiles in order to actually get the resources. The main screen does a good job of giving the essentials without being overwhelming and there are tooltips for just about every single button you can click.Īdditionally, some gameplay elements have been streamlined. The interface has been given a thorough overhaul, relegating some of the more extraneous information to sub-menus. With so much complexity, it's good that Civilization V is more newbie-friendly than its predecessors. The various paths to victory mean there's a good amount of replay value: If you tire of winning through one method, you can experiment with another. You can be the first country to make it to space or you can construct the United Nations and win the vote for world leader, just to name a couple. There are several ways to win a game of Civilization V.
